Our Mission

Build economic capacity that lasts.

Onyx Repository Foundation exists to help Black communities build, strengthen, and sustain the institutions they rely on—so more local spending becomes local opportunity, more local talent becomes local ownership, and more community needs become community assets.

Why Onyx exists

When a community lacks an essential resource, its dollars must leave to find it.

Onyx was created around a basic economic reality: communities cannot build durable wealth if the services, businesses, platforms, and institutions they use every day are consistently owned and operated somewhere else.

Our work is therefore bigger than supporting individual businesses. We are building an interconnected economic ecosystem—transportation, commerce, media, workforce, capital, and future institutions—so community activity can create local jobs, local operating capacity, and the resources required to build the next solution.

Mission priorities

Four outcomes guide the work.

Onyx is designed to move beyond isolated programs toward a system that compounds community capacity over time.

01

Ownership

Increase the number and strength of businesses, platforms, institutions, and assets rooted in the communities they serve.

02

Economic Circulation

Create practical ways for everyday spending, contracts, procurement, and participation to support local economic activity.

03

Opportunity

Connect residents to employment, entrepreneurship, training, contracts, leadership, and pathways to long-term economic mobility.

04

Reinvestment

Build mechanisms that return value into future businesses, infrastructure, and community priorities instead of allowing every dollar to exit the system.

Accountability by design

Community intelligence and professional expertise share the table.

Onyx separates identifying the need from evaluating the business solution, creating two complementary accountability functions.

COMMUNITY

County Committees

Document immediate and essential community needs, infrastructure gaps, resident priorities, and local conditions that should inform planning and investment.

  • Community needs reporting
  • Priority identification
  • Local knowledge and context
  • Public accountability
EXPERTISE

Business Advisory Board

Bring sector-specific professionals and operators into the evaluation of businesses, platforms, and proposed institutions.

  • Feasibility and operating review
  • Business growth strategy
  • Financial and compliance guidance
  • Mentorship and technical assistance

Infrastructure lens

Prioritize what people depend on.

Onyx focuses first on essential resources and daily-use systems because those are the places where economic dependency and economic opportunity are most visible.

The strategic shift

From temporary intervention to permanent capacity.

Grants and philanthropy remain important, but Onyx is designed so outside capital can help build systems capable of producing additional value after the original funding has been deployed.

TRADITIONAL LINEAR MODEL

Fund → Program → Spend → Reapply

Valuable programs can still end when the funding cycle ends, leaving the underlying economic dependency unchanged.

ONYX CIRCULAR MODEL

Need → Build → Use → Earn → Reinvest → Build Again

The objective is to grow the community’s ability to repeatedly create and sustain more of its own solutions.

Pay it forward

Every successful build should strengthen the next one.

Businesses and operators supported through the Onyx ecosystem are expected to participate in a culture of reinvestment and community contribution appropriate to their structure—whether through repayment, fund contributions, mentorship, education, social action, workforce participation, vendor development, or other measurable community benefit.

The goal is not charity from the businesses. It is ecosystem responsibility.
